Morgan, as a town was chartered in the Republic of Vermont on November 6, 1780. The original chartered name was Caldersburgh. In the early days of the Republic, land in the form of a town was given (granted) to a number of grantees (in this instance there were 64) that were able to sell land to individuals who were to settle and work the land granted to them. The Republic was thus able to expand its sphere of influence and grow economically.
Jim and Bonnie McWain have operated the store since October 2014. The US Postal Service has been associated with the store since the late 1800’s when the Island Pond stage, a regular horse and wagon passenger and freight service, brought the mail daily from Island Pond. Subsequently, a Post Office was part of the store and currently the US Postal Service leases space from the store owners for the Morgan Post Office.
